Professor Bill Ashcrofts Third Lecture at HIT: Orientalism

June 8, 2012, Professor Bill Ashcroft gave his third lecture at HIT about Orientalism at 1:30 p.m. in Room 3036 of Jixie Building.

Orientalism, as a book written by Edward Said, is one of the milestones in post-colonial studies, creating the concept of orientalism. Since publication, this book has aroused wide critical studies and drawn scholars attention on how to interpret orientalism. In Bills lecture, he mainly focuses on the three pursuits of orientalism and the worldliness of Said in writing this book, by which Said reveals his concern for the other represented by Europeans.

In Prof. Bill Ashcrofts lecture, it can be known that orientalsim refers to an academic discipline, a style of thought and a corporate institution for dealing with the Orient. From whichever perspective, the concept is used to indicate the global cultural relations, in which Europeans have their special way to know the Orient as barbaric, feminine, and exotic. Said, despite his paradox identity as a British Palestinist, aims to reverse the gaze of the Europeans and conduct his function of being an intellectual, to speak truth to power.

Prof. Bill Ashcroft makes a penetrating analysis of Saids Orientalism and points out how Chinese scholars could use it to have a further study on post-colonial topics.
